Overview
Six boiling water reactors on the Pacific coast of Fukushima prefecture. The March 2011 tsunami flooded units 1 to 4, three cores melted and hydrogen explosions tore the buildings apart. Rated INES 7 alongside Chernobyl, the site is now in decades of decommissioning with robotic fuel retrieval and treated water discharge.
