Overview
A Pacific atoll where the United States detonated 43 nuclear devices between 1948 and 1958, including Ivy Mike in 1952, the first full scale hydrogen bomb, which vaporized the island of Elugelab. Contaminated soil was later sealed under the concrete Runit Dome, now threatened by rising seas.
