Overview
The French test site in the Algerian Sahara where Gerboise Bleue, the first French nuclear bomb, was detonated in February 1960. Four atmospheric tests were fired here before testing moved underground at In Ekker and later to Polynesia. Radioactive contamination remains a source of friction between Algeria and France.
