Enrico Fermi Unit 1

Civil PowerUSA

Overview

A sodium cooled fast breeder demonstration reactor on Lake Erie near Monroe, Michigan. In October 1966 a loose zirconium plate blocked coolant flow and partially melted fuel. The incident inspired the book We Almost Lost Detroit. It ran again briefly before closing in 1972, and the Fermi 2 boiling water reactor now operates at the site.
